Kevin Macdonald directed State of Play (2009), a political thriller adapted from the BBC series. Russell Crowe plays Cal McAffrey, an old-school newspaper investigative journalist who discovers that the death of a congressman's research assistant connects to a private military contractor. Helen Mirren plays his editor, Ben Affleck the congressman, Rachel McAdams the digital-side reporter Crowe spars with.

Hodinkee identifies the watch on McAffrey's wrist as the Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Limited Series, ref. 311.30.42.30.01.001, distinguished from a standard Speedmaster by a gilt hippocampus at the top of the dial with "1957" printed below, plus the Omega logo and wordmark in red. It is the kind of detail-specific limited edition that a prop department would not bother sourcing if a standard Speedmaster would look identical on camera, which suggests it is Crowe's own watch rather than wardrobe stock. The Hodinkee writer notes Crowe sold off a sizable portion of his personal collection at Sotheby's Australia in 2018, including a different Speedmaster on a black leather strap, and speculates the 50th-anniversary piece in the film is also a personal piece.

McAffrey is the kind of journalist who still uses a Rolodex, drives a beat-up car, and distrusts anything digital. The Speedmaster on a leather strap is the right watch for that character: a manual-wind chronograph in production since 1957, which is roughly the era McAffrey seems to wish he was living in. Hodinkee draws the obvious lineage to Robert Redford's red Submariner in All the President's Men, the canonical investigative-journalist film, and director Macdonald has cited that movie as an inspiration. The Speedmaster on Crowe's wrist sits comfortably in that tradition: a serious watch with serious horological provenance, no wealth signaling required.
