Allen Hughes directed this without his twin brother Albert, which makes it the first solo-Hughes crime film. The Hughes Brothers built their reputation on Menace II Society and Dead Presidents in the 1990s, and Broken City is a different register entirely — New York political corruption, backroom deals, a mayor who uses people like disposable tools. Crowe plays Nicholas Hostetler, who hires Mark Wahlberg's ex-cop-turned-PI to follow his wife, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, supposedly to confirm an affair. The real agenda involves a massive real estate deal and an upcoming election, and by the time Wahlberg figures out he has been used, the damage is done. Jeffrey Wright and Kyle Chandler round out a cast that deserved a tighter script.
Crowe's Hostetler wears a watch throughout, visible in office and fundraiser scenes, but the model has not been identified. Whatever it is, it would fit the wardrobe of a man who has occupied Gracie Mansion long enough to stop worrying about appearances — Hostetler is not trying to impress anyone, he is trying to survive the week. A corrupt New York mayor could wear anything from a Rolex to a Timex and justify it depending on the audience.
