Philip D'Antoni produced Bullitt and The French Connection, which means he was responsible for two of the best car chases ever filmed before he directed his own movie. The Seven-Ups (1973) is that movie, and its chase through upper Manhattan — Scheider's Pontiac Ventura against a Lincoln Continental at speeds that would get you arrested in real life — belongs in the same conversation. Roy Scheider plays Buddy Manucci, the leader of a plainclothes NYPD unit that specializes in cases carrying seven years or more. When his informant is murdered, Buddy discovers that someone has been kidnapping mobsters for ransom and that the trail leads closer to home than he expected.
His steel watch has not been identified. The available image is a production still. The film was shot on location in New York with a documentary feel, and Scheider's wardrobe reflects that — rumpled suits, nothing polished. A mid-range steel watch fits a cop who dresses for the street, not for court.
