Ron Perlman wears a Breitling Bentley

Ron Perlman plays Nino in Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, the loud, unstable half of a two-man partnership with Albert Brooks's Bernie Rose. Where Brooks plays his menace quiet, Perlman plays his out loud. Nino runs a pizza place as a front, talks when he should listen, and escalates everything he touches until Bernie has to clean up after him. Perlman is built like a man who can fill a doorway, and Refn frames him to use it.

Nino wears a Breitling for Bentley chronograph, the big 48mm one with the heavily knurled bezel that Breitling and Bentley Motors built together in the 2000s to sell automotive luxury at full volume. It is the watch the character would buy: brash, obvious, expensive on sight. Except the watch on screen is not a Breitling at all. According to Luxury Bazaar, the production had a replica made specifically for the film rather than risk a real one on a stunt-driving shoot, and the auction house iCollector, which later sold the piece, lists it as a custom-made replica worn by Nino and acquired directly from the production company, with a letter of authenticity.

So the most ostentatious watch in Drive is a fake, which is almost too fitting for Nino, a small-time gangster trying to look like a big one. On screen it reads as the genuine article, which is all the character needs it to be.
