Rodrigo Santoro sits on the edge of Sarah's bed, shirtless, a small round watch still on his wrist, and across the whole of Love Actually (2003) this is as close as he and Sarah ever get. Santoro plays Karl, the enigmatic chief designer at the company where Laura Linney's Sarah works. When her boss Harry asks how long she has been in love with him, her answer is exact: two years, seven months, three days, and, she supposes, an hour and thirty minutes. She finally gets him home after the office Christmas party. Then her brother calls from his care facility, she answers, and Karl gathers his things and quietly leaves. That is the whole of their story.

The watch is barely visible in the scene, a round, light dial on a dark strap. It has been identified as a Patek Philippe Calatrava, but the only source is the French site Montres de Luxe, which names the model without showing how the identification was made, and no watch publication has corroborated it. The Calatrava has been Patek Philippe's foundational dress watch since 1932: round, thin, and plain, the design most other dress watches are measured against.
