Bob Merrick crashes his speedboat and almost dies, and a beloved local doctor actually does die because the only resuscitator in town was being used to save Merrick. That is the setup for Douglas Sirk's Magnificent Obsession (1954), and Rock Hudson plays Merrick as a rich playboy who has to live with the fact that his recklessness killed someone. Jane Wyman plays Helen Phillips, the doctor's widow, and Merrick falls in love with her while trying to make amends, a process that gets more complicated when she goes blind in an accident that's also his fault.
In the sighting image, Hudson sits on a beach, his left wrist partially visible with what appears to be a dark-banded watch. Sirk's melodramas were always about surfaces — beautiful people, beautiful homes, beautiful objects — and a watch on the wrist of a man learning that none of it matters is Sirk at his most pointed. The brand has not been identified.
