Joseph Wambaugh's 1975 novel The Choirboys followed LAPD patrol officers who blew off the job's pressure at after-hours drinking sessions in the park they called 'choir practice.' Robert Aldrich's 1977 film played the material broader and more comic than the book, and Wambaugh hated the result. He took out a full-page ad against it, sued Lorimar, won a settlement, and had his name taken off the picture.

Robert Webber plays Deputy Chief Riggs, the department brass the street cops resent, and the film builds to an authority-baiting confrontation between Riggs and the veteran patrolman Spermwhale Whalen. The watch on Riggs is identified as a yellow-gold Rolex Datejust, but only by a single watch blog that offers no reference and no image, and the watch is not visible in any circulating still. The Datejust has been Rolex's classic dress watch since 1945, the first wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. Without a clearer source, the identification stays a plausible guess rather than a confirmed one.
