Robert Shaw wears a Seiko 62MAS

Peter Benchley wrote another sea story and Robert Shaw went back underwater. Two years after Quint in Jaws, Shaw plays Romer Treece, a Bermuda treasure hunter who guides Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset to a pair of stacked wrecks: a sunken World War II freighter, the Goliath, full of morphine ampules, and beneath it a far older Spanish wreck holding gold. Peter Yates, who directed Bullitt, is behind the camera, working from a screenplay Benchley wrote with Tracy Keenan Wynn. Louis Gossett Jr. plays Henri Cloche, the drug kingpin after the morphine, and Eli Wallach is Adam Coffin.

Treece wears a Seiko 62MAS, the watch that in the summer of 1965 became Japan's first true dive watch. It is a slim steel diver rated to 150 meters, with a narrow black bezel for tracking bottom time, a black dial of luminous markers, a date window at three o'clock, and an automatic movement. Seiko built the 62MAS for only about three years, so by the time The Deep was shot in 1977 it was already an old and fairly uncommon watch. Shaw wears his on a micro-perforated black tropic rubber strap, the soft perforated kind common on dive watches of the period.
