Robert Shaw died of a heart attack in Ireland in August 1978, at fifty-one, before Force 10 from Navarone opened that December. It was one of his last films. He plays Major Mallory, the commando Gregory Peck had played in the 1961 The Guns of Navarone, and the sequel sends Mallory and a demolitions man into wartime Yugoslavia to bring down a bridge, with a young Harrison Ford leading the unit they join.
On Shaw's wrist is a Hamilton Broad Arrow, a military field watch. Hamilton is a fitting brand for it: the company turned its whole production over to the American war effort in the 1940s, making military field watches and marine chronometers by the hundreds of thousands. The watch itself runs a few years late for the film's 1943 setting, as Worn & Wound has noted, but a field watch suits a commando in a way a dress watch would not.
