1966 was early Redford — after Inside Daisy Clover, before Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid turned him into a star. Sydney Pollack directed This Property Is Condemned, their first of seven collaborations, loosely based on a Tennessee Williams one-act play. Redford plays Owen Legate, a railroad man sent to a Depression-era Mississippi town to decide which workers to lay off. Natalie Wood plays Alva Starr, the local beauty whose mother runs a boarding house and pushes her toward wealthy men. The film is a southern melodrama about people trapped by circumstance, and Redford's Owen is the outsider who offers Alva a way out — or seems to.
His watch has not been identified. The available image shows a young Redford in a rumpled shirt with no watch visible. For a railroad company man in the 1930s, a period-appropriate dress watch would be expected, but the image does not show one.
