Robert Redford wears an unidentified watch

Redford plays Owen Legate, a railroad man sent to a Depression-era Mississippi town to decide which workers to lay off. Natalie Wood plays Alva Starr, the local beauty whose mother runs a boarding house and pushes her toward wealthy men. The film is a southern melodrama about people trapped by circumstance, and Redford's Owen is the outsider who offers Alva a way out — or seems to.
