Robert Redford plays Wade Lewis in Inside Daisy Clover, a matinee idol who sweeps the young title character off her feet in 1930s Hollywood. Robert Mulligan directed this 1965 drama about a teenage tomboy from the Santa Monica pier who gets discovered and ground through the studio system. Redford's character is charming and damaged, and his sudden disappearance after marrying Daisy reveals depths of self-destruction that the studio wants to keep hidden. The film takes a cynical look at old Hollywood glamour, with Natalie Wood playing Daisy as someone too stubborn to be entirely broken.
Wade's watch is a gold dress piece with a flat round case and a minimalist silver dial, gilt hour markers and no numerals, on a black exotic-scaled leather band. In the publicity shot by the Rolls-Royce, sunglasses on, it reads as a pale round dial on a dark strap at his raised wrist. It resembles the dress watches Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, Omega, and Tissot were selling when the film was made, and that is the catch: like much of the wardrobe, the watch belongs to 1965 rather than the 1930s the film depicts, though it lacks the one detail, a date window, that would make the anachronism undeniable. The maker has not been identified.
