Redford first tried to make A Walk in the Woods in the late 1990s, planning to hike the Appalachian Trail on screen with Paul Newman. Newman died in 2008, and the project sat until Nick Nolte signed on. Ken Kwapis directed the 2015 adaptation of Bill Bryson's memoir, with Redford as Bryson and Nolte as his out-of-shape, unreliable friend Stephen Katz. Emma Thompson plays Bryson's wife in a small role. The film is slight — two old men bickering on a trail — but there is a real melancholy underneath about aging and the shrinking of ambition.

Redford's watch is barely visible in the camping scene where he and Nolte fumble with tent poles. It appears to be a small, practical piece, which fits Bill Bryson: a travel writer, not a mountaineer, attempting something he is probably too old for. One watch forum has tentatively identified it as a Victorinox Swiss Army Alliance, and Redford did sell Victorinox watches through his Sundance catalog, but the still image doesn't show enough detail to confirm anything.
