Norman Jewison's Only You opens its second half on the Amalfi coast, and the promotional still everyone remembers puts four of its leads in an open convertible above the water: Marisa Tomei in the back as Faith Corvatch, Bonnie Hunt at the far edge as Kate, and Robert Downey Jr. front and center behind dark sunglasses as Peter Wright, the shoe salesman who has talked his way into Faith's chase across Italy by letting her believe he is the fated stranger named Damon Bradley. It is a 1994 TriStar romance built almost entirely out of that single lie, and the photograph is the film in miniature: sunlight, the Gulf of Salerno, four people leaning toward something just off the frame.
Look at the wrists in that frame and you find exactly one watch, and it does not belong to Downey. It rides on Bonnie Hunt's arm, draped over the car door at the right edge, a round polished case with a dark dial on a light band, no markings legible at this distance. Downey's own hands sit below the door line, out of the shot entirely, so the question of what Peter Wright wore is one the keeper image simply does not answer. No reputable source puts a specific watch on him in this film either, which is worth saying plainly because the record once carried an IWC Da Vinci here without a single citation behind it. Downey's documented watch life runs through Rolex, Patek, Omega, and the Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX he wore as Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, with no IWC on the list, so the safest thing the evidence supports is the honest one: the watch on Peter Wright's wrist, if there was one, stays unidentified.
