Robert De Niro wears a Heuer 1000 Series

Max Cady comes out of prison after fourteen years rebuilt as a weapon: muscle layered on muscle, teeth filed flat, every inch of skin tattooed with scripture about vengeance and judgment. Robert De Niro did much of that to himself, gaining thirty pounds and paying a dentist to grind his teeth down for the part. The trick of Scorsese's 1991 remake is that Cady is not the clean villain of the 1962 original: Wesley Strick's screenplay makes his old defense lawyer, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), genuinely guilty of burying evidence, so the man stalking the family is owed something. Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, the original's Bowden and Cady, appear in small roles, and Juliette Lewis took an Oscar nomination as the teenage daughter Cady fixes on.

On his wrist is a Heuer 1000 Series Professional, the black-and-gold diver often taken for the line's 'Black Coral' variant. Heuer launched the 1000 in 1979, a quartz dive watch meant to win back ground from Rolex during the quartz crisis, and it was among the last lines to wear the Heuer name alone before the TAG takeover of 1985. Black PVD case, gold-tone accents, 200 meters of water resistance, a few hundred dollars new. Cady wears it with the loud Hawaiian shirts that are part of his look.
