Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho (1991) follows Mike Waters, a narcoleptic street hustler in Portland who falls asleep without warning, often in the middle of the road. River Phoenix plays Mike, and the film gives a close-up of the watch he carries: a Westclox Dax pocket watch, its white dial legible in his hand as he checks the time alone on an empty country road, wearing a beanie and a workshirt stitched with the name "Bob."

Westclox was an American maker of inexpensive everyday clocks and pocket watches, the Dax among its plain, low-cost models. Van Sant built the film loosely around Shakespeare's Henry IV, with Keanu Reeves as the prince figure, Scott Favor, and Phoenix as his companion.
