Richard Roundtree wears a Seiko Automatic Diver

Stirling Silliphant, six years past his Oscar for In the Heat of the Night, wrote this third Shaft film, and John Guillermin directed. The plot sends John Shaft undercover as a migrant laborer to break a human-trafficking ring, a story that runs from Ethiopia to the French Riviera, far from the Harlem of the first two films. Vonetta McGee and Frank Finlay co-star. Guillermin would make The Towering Inferno the next year and King Kong in 1976, and this one is leaner than either.

Shaft wears a Seiko automatic diver. No studio paperwork records the prop, so the identification rests on the watch itself: a brushed steel barrel-shaped case, a black rotating bezel over a black dial of luminous markers, and a crown set at four o'clock, the configuration of Seiko's late-1960s divers in the family that produced the 6105. On Roundtree's wrist it rides on a plain brown leather band rather than a dive strap.
