Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman (1990) grossed $463 million worldwide and turned a corporate raider with a Rolex into a romantic lead. Richard Gere plays Edward Lewis, a man who buys companies and breaks them up for profit, and the watch on his wrist is a two-tone Rolex Datejust in steel and yellow gold, the combination Rolex calls Rolesor, at 36mm. It is the default power-suit Rolex of its era: successful, conservative, and expensive without being loud.
The two-tone Datejust was the business watch of the 1980s and early 1990s, the one worn by the bankers, lawyers, and dealmakers of the leveraged-buyout years that Edward Lewis is drawn from. On a Beverly Hills corporate raider, it reads less as jewelry than as uniform.
