Jean-Marc Vallee's Wild follows Cheryl Strayed's real 1995 hike up the Pacific Crest Trail, taken after her mother's death and the end of her marriage, with Nick Hornby adapting the memoir and keeping its running joke about the overstuffed pack Strayed nicknamed the Monster. Reese Witherspoon plays Strayed, in a performance that earned her a second Academy Award nomination; the real Cheryl Strayed turns up in a brief cameo near the start.
Through the hike, Strayed wears a Casio W201-1AV, the plainest sort of digital watch: a slim black resin case, a grey LCD, and a backlight. It is the anti-gear note in a film preoccupied with gear, where the story keeps weighing and discarding equipment but the watch on the hiker is an inexpensive quartz with an alarm and a stopwatch, water resistant to 50 metres and meant to be forgotten about. The case markings read clearly enough to settle it: CASIO and ILLUMINATOR across the bezel, WATER 50M RESIST opposite, an everyday watch that suits a character stripping her life down to what she can carry.
