Raquel Welch wears a Breitling Co-Pilot

Fathom (1967) puts Raquel Welch in a white jumpsuit as Fathom Harvill, a champion skydiver pulled into a sunny Spanish spy chase, directed by Leslie H. Martinson the year after he made Batman: The Movie. On her wrist through the parachute work sits a big steel chronograph, and audiences in 1967 noticed it at once, because a watch that size was unmistakably a man's watch on a woman's wrist.

The watch is a Breitling Co-Pilot, reference 765 AVI, and it has a better service record than most film props. Breitling built the line from 1953 as a working aviator's chronograph: 41 millimetres of steel, a bidirectional rotating bezel, a black dial with white counters, tritium on the hands and markers. The counter at nine o'clock runs fifteen minutes instead of the usual thirty, divided into five marked segments, because fifteen minutes was reckoned the time a pilot needed to complete the pre-flight checklist. The French air force considered the watch and turned it down, since unlike the Type XX chronographs it had no flyback function. None of that hurt its afterlife. Collectors came to call this reference the Raquel Welch, Breitling put the actress in a period advertisement, and in 2020 the company reissued the 765 AVI as a tribute to the original.
