Raoul Bova wears a Casio G-Shock

Most of the watches in Alien vs. Predator are anonymous. The expedition Charles Bishop Weyland assembles to drill down to a pyramid under the Antarctic ice is a couple of dozen people in cold-weather gear, and the camera does not linger on their wrists. Sebastian de Rosa is the exception.

Raoul Bova plays him as the team's archaeologist, the Italian academic who can read the pyramid's hieroglyphs and works out, too late, that the place is a Predator hunting ground and the humans are the bait. His watch gets an actual close-up, which is why it is one of the few in the film anyone has bothered to identify.

What they identified is a thin Casio G-Shock. The site that catalogues this sort of thing lists it as the G-2300, though you will also see it called the near-identical G-2310, and the two are close enough that the disagreement is understandable. Either way it is the slim, stripped-down branch of the G-Shock family, not the fat resin brick most people picture when they hear the name. It is the watch of someone who wanted the toughness without the bulk.

Which is the right instinct for the work. A field archaeologist spends his life somewhere inconvenient, and Sebastian's particular inconvenience is a hole in the ice at the bottom of the world. A G-Shock is built to survive being dropped, frozen, and soaked, and asks for nothing in return but a fresh battery every few years. The film never makes anything of the watch, and it did not need to. The choice quietly says he had done fieldwork before, in places where a watch that died on you was a problem you could not fix until you got home.
