Ralph Fiennes plays David Henninger in The Forgiven, John Michael McDonagh's adaptation of Lawrence Osborne's novel. Henninger is a wealthy, hard-drinking Englishman who drives intoxicated through the High Atlas at night, on his way to a rich friend's weekend party, and hits and kills a young Moroccan boy in the road. He and his wife Jo, played by Jessica Chastain, agree to report it as an accident. Then the dead boy's father arrives to take David back across the desert to bury his son, and the film follows the two days David spends being slowly, quietly held to account.
There is a moment just after the crash, the car lights still on, when Henninger leans over a map spread on the hood and you can see the watch on his left wrist. It is an old one: a round steel case, a cream dial, a fat winding crown, and a brown leather strap. It reads as the watch of a man with inherited things, the opposite of flashy, and it suits Fiennes's Henninger exactly, all plummy disdain and old money.
The brand is a mystery. The dial shows enough to say the watch is vintage and nothing more. No watch site has named it, and the only trace online is a Spotern post where someone asked the crowd for help and no one answered.
