Ralph Fiennes wears a Rolex Day-Date

Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days (1995), written by James Cameron and Jay Cocks, is set in Los Angeles over the final two days of 1999 — a city running on racial tension, street violence, and a black market for illegal memory recordings called Squid tapes. Ralph Fiennes plays Lenny Nero, a former LAPD officer in his early thirties who now deals those recordings out of a briefcase, living in a squalid apartment while dressing like someone who doesn't. The script establishes him on arrival as handsome, charming, and perpetually on the edge of losing everything.

The gold Rolex Nero wears is consistent with a Day-Date: round case, gold metal bracelet with the three-piece rounded-link design that became the watch's signature after Lyndon B. Johnson was photographed wearing one in office in the 1960s, prompting Rolex to market it as "The President's Watch." The Day-Date debuted in 1956 as the first wristwatch to display the day of the week spelled out in full alongside the date, and it has remained available only in precious metals — yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum — making it Rolex's most unambiguous status signal.

The script establishes that Nero's Rolex is not real. When a tow truck arrives to repossess his BMW, he pulls the watch off his wrist and holds it out as collateral, then returns to his briefcase for a replacement. He carries multiple identical fakes. The watch he offers as leverage is a knockoff of the most recognizable luxury watch in America, used by a man who deals in recorded experiences to people paying to feel something they have not lived. The fake Rolex fits everything else about Lenny Nero: expensive clothes over an empty bank account, charm over desperation, a performance of a life he cannot quite afford.
