The Spotlight team's method was patient, repetitive, unglamorous work — knocking on doors, cross-referencing directories, sitting with survivors who hadn't told their stories in decades. Rachel McAdams plays Sacha Pfeiffer, the reporter who handled many of those face-to-face interviews, and her performance is built around listening. Tom McCarthy's 2015 film won Best Picture by making journalism look like what it actually is: slow, difficult, and occasionally devastating.
McAdams wears a watch throughout the film that hasn't been identified. It appears to be a simple, functional piece — nothing that would distract from the work or the character. Pfeiffer's watch should be quiet. The real Sacha Pfeiffer is a working journalist, now at NPR, not someone who accessorizes for effect. Whatever McAdams is wearing here, it does its job by not being noticeable.
