Pierce Brosnan wears an Oris Artelier

The first bomb in The Foreigner (2017) goes off outside a Knightsbridge shop and kills the daughter of Quan, a quiet London restaurant owner played by Jackie Chan. A splinter group calling itself the Authentic IRA claims the attack. Quan wants names, and the man he decides can get them is in Belfast: Liam Hennessy, deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, a former Provisional IRA leader who renounced violence for mainstream politics. Pierce Brosnan gives Hennessy a beard the Irish press read at once as Gerry Adams and a career that tracks Martin McGuinness, the IRA commander who really did become deputy first minister. When Hennessy stalls, Quan blows up the toilet of his well-guarded office with a bomb built from groceries.

Hennessy manages the crisis from restaurant tables and telephones, and in the table scenes the camera catches his left wrist plainly: an Oris Artelier Thelonious Monk Limited Edition, a 40mm steel dress watch on a black leather strap with a dark blue dial under a domed crystal. Oris made 1,000 of them at $1,900 to honour the jazz pianist, the hour markers set off their usual marks as a nod to Monk's syncopated style. Monk himself is one of only five jazz musicians ever to appear on the cover of Time, and among jazz composers only Duke Ellington has been recorded more.

The identification came out of the film's menswear orbit rather than the watch press. From Tailors With Love, the blog that interviewed costume designer Alex Bovaird about dressing Brosnan and Chan, credits a reader named Ben Hodges with spotting the Oris, and Wrist Enthusiast's survey of the brand on screen lists the placement outright.
