No Escape drops Pierce Brosnan into a country coming apart. John Erick Dowdle casts him as Hammond, a genial Englishman who chats up Owen Wilson's Jack Dwyer and his family on the flight into an unnamed Southeast Asian city, then vanishes. When an anti-foreigner coup turns the streets to chaos, Hammond resurfaces with a pistol and a confession: he helped broker the corporate water deals that lit the fuse. It is a small part, and Brosnan plays the guilt well.
The watch is the harder thing to see. Hammond's is a Movado from the 800 line, the Swiss brand's sport range, but the film keeps it at arm's length, never holding on the wrist long enough to read it. There is a quiet irony in that. The actor who spent four Bond films making the Omega Seamaster a household name turns up here in a watch nobody can quite make out, on a man whose whole role is to stay in the margins until the damage is already done.
