Pierce Brosnan plays Professor Donald Kessler in Mars Attacks!, the presidential science advisor who keeps insisting the Martians come in peace while they are actively vaporizing people. Tim Burton built the whole movie on this kind of irony: the experts are wrong, the military is wrong, and Slim Whitman records end up saving the world. Kessler is one of the jokes, a man who prides himself on precision and analysis, which makes his catastrophic misreadings funnier. He can tell you exactly what time it is. He cannot tell you that the aliens are obviously hostile.

The watch looks like something an academic would wear. Functional, respectable, probably something he does not think about much. I do not know what brand of watch a pompous scientist character would wear in 1996, but something respectable and not flashy sounds right. Whatever it is, it keeps perfect time while its owner misses every signal that matters. The brand has not been identified.
