Peter Sellers wears a Rolex GMT-Master

Inspector Jacques Clouseau is convinced that the beautiful Maria Gambrelli (Elke Sommer), a maid in the Ballon household, is innocent of murder, even as every clue lands on her, and he holds the position through the whole investigation on the theory that she is protecting the real killer. A Shot in the Dark (1964) is the second Pink Panther film and, for many, the best. Blake Edwards directed and wrote it with William Peter Blatty, who later wrote The Exorcist and won an Oscar for its screenplay. Herbert Lom makes his first appearance as Commissioner Charles Dreyfus, twitching toward madness at Clouseau's every survival, and Burt Kwouk debuts as Cato, the manservant under standing orders to ambush his employer without warning.

The Rolex GMT-Master Clouseau wears is really Sellers's own. The actor let his off-screen taste for watches carry over to the character and put his personal Pepsi-bezel reference 1675, steel, 40 millimetres, on a Jubilee-style bracelet, on Clouseau's wrist; he would wear it again three years later as the gambler Evelyn Tremble in Casino Royale. The watch is easiest to read in the billiard room, where Clouseau tries to mend the felt he has just torn. Rolex had introduced the GMT-Master in 1954 with Pan Am so that crews could track two time zones at once, which makes it a thoroughly practical instrument on a detective who cannot operate a billiard cue.
