Orphan (2009) turns on a couple who adopt a poised nine-year-old named Esther and slowly understand she is not a child at all. Peter Sarsgaard plays John Coleman, the husband, the one who keeps extending Esther the benefit of the doubt as his wife's alarm grows. Worn & Wound's Halloween screen-watch roundup notes what sits on his wrist: "a very nice IWC Portugese Chronograph with a white dial."

IWC introduced the Portuguese Chronograph, reference 3714, in 1998 as the approachable sibling to its split-seconds Portuguese. The look has barely moved since: a clean white dial, applied Arabic numerals, slim leaf hands, and two subdials set at six and twelve. The version from John's era runs the caliber 79350, IWC's reworked Valjoux 7750, with the date dropped and the running seconds moved to six o'clock. By the time of Orphan the watch had been in the catalog, almost unchanged, for over a decade.
