"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?" Peter Graves delivers some of the most uncomfortable cockpit dialogue in film history as Captain Clarence Oveur in Airplane! (1980). The Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker parody turned Graves's deadpan Mission: Impossible persona inside out, making his natural gravitas the punchline. He sits beside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's co-pilot Roger Murdock and asks a young boy a series of increasingly inappropriate questions, all with the same straight face he used to brief the Impossible Missions Force for seven seasons.
A watch is visible on Graves's left wrist in the cockpit scene, though it's too small and dark in the image to identify. Given the production's low budget and improvisational approach to props, it's most likely a personal piece rather than a wardrobe department selection.
