Roman Polanski has never been interested in making his audience comfortable, and Bitter Moon (1992) might be his most deliberately uncomfortable film. Peter Coyote plays Oscar, a wheelchair-bound American writer on a cruise ship who narrates the story of his obsessive, destructive affair with Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner) to a buttoned-up English couple played by Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott Thomas. The film is about desire as a form of self-destruction, and Coyote tells it with a mix of relish and disgust that makes the viewer complicit.

A rectangular dress watch is visible on Oscar's wrist, identified as a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Rene-Alfred Chauvot designed the Reverso in 1931 for polo players, who needed to flip the case over to protect the crystal during matches, and by the 1990s it had become an Art Deco dress watch favored by writers and academics. The identification comes from a single watch-spotting site, and while the case shape on screen fits the Reverso, the brand cannot be read, so it stays a likely attribution.
