Pedro Pascal wears a Rolex Datejust

For most of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022), the CIA is certain about Javi Gutiérrez: the Spanish billionaire made his fortune dealing arms, and he has kidnapped the daughter of a Catalan politician who campaigns against crime. The Javi that Nick Cage actually meets, after taking a million dollars to appear at a birthday party in Mallorca, doesn't match the briefing. Pedro Pascal plays him as a needy superfan with a shrine room of Cage memorabilia, a wax figure of Castor Troy from Face/Off, and a screenplay he presses Cage to write with him. The real arms dealer turns out to be his cousin Lucas. Tom Gormican directed, from a script he wrote with Kevin Etten.

Through all of it Javi wears a two-tone Rolex Datejust: steel and yellow gold on a Jubilee bracelet, silver dial, fluted bezel. Hodinkee noted in its Watching Movies column that the watch "can be seen in basically every scene he's in." Oracle of Time made the same call in its tour of Pascal's on-screen watches: "To emphasise just how rich Javi is, he wears a bi-metal Rolex Datejust with a silver dial." Revolution lists the Datejust and silver dial as well. The model has been in continuous production since 1945.

The other watch in the film belongs to Cage, playing a down-and-out version of himself. Hodinkee caught what it took for a solid gold Submariner in an early therapy scene, then watched him spend the rest of the film in a gold-tone Casio LTP E140G-9A on a mesh bracelet, and wondered why a man with real gold watches would wear one that only looks the part: "there's something sort of chaotic, from a horological standpoint, about wearing a Casio to the home of a mega-wealthy Spanish criminal." Its verdict on Javi's Datejust ran three words. "It's no Casio."
