Paul Newman wears a Hamilton QED Frontier LED

The man whose name is on one of the most valuable wristwatches ever sold spends Slap Shot in an LED digital. Paul Newman's own Rolex Daytona, the watch that gave the 'Paul Newman' dial its name, sold for $17.75 million at auction in 2017; here, as the washed-up player-coach Reggie Dunlop, he wears a gold-plated Hamilton QED Frontier. George Roy Hill directed, from Nancy Dowd's script drawn from her brother Ned's years in minor-league hockey. The Charlestown Chiefs are a failing team in a dying mill town, until the Hanson Brothers start winning with their fists.

The QED stood for Quartz Electronic Digital, Hamilton's follow-up to the Pulsar it had launched a few years earlier as the first digital watch. The Frontier showed the time in red LEDs only when you pressed the button, the display too power-hungry to run continuously, and it came in brushed steel or, as here, gold plating. Hamilton had built watches in Lancaster, Pennsylvania since 1892.
