American Splendor (2003) is Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini's portrait of Harvey Pekar, the Cleveland file clerk who turned his ordinary, irritable life into a long-running underground comic. Paul Giamatti plays him as a perpetually exhausted man hunched over his own existence. In an early-morning shot at 5:55, sorting through papers with his head in his hand, he wears a plain round watch: a steel case, a cream dial with applied markers, on a worn brown leather strap. It is the opposite of a statement watch, which is exactly right for Pekar. No maker's name is legible on the dial, so the watch is catalogued here as unidentified, with the frame kept as evidence for anyone who can place it.
