Olivier Marchal spent twelve years as a French police officer, then became the director of some of the hardest crime films the country has made, 36 Quai des Orfèvres and MR 73 among them. Ibiza is not one of those. Arnaud Lemort's 2019 comedy is a light thing about a man, played by Christian Clavier, who promises his girlfriend's teenage son a vacation anywhere if he passes his baccalaureate, and gets dragged to Ibiza for his trouble. Marchal turns up in a supporting part called Pascalou, and on his right wrist is a steel Rolex Daytona with a black dial. The magazine that spotted it thinks the watch is his own.

The Daytona is an odd watch to wear to a beach comedy, because it is one of the most coveted watches on earth. Rolex built it in 1963 as a motor-racing chronograph, named for the Florida speedway, and for years it sold slowly. Then Paul Newman started wearing the one his wife Joanne Woodward had given him, on the track and off, and the model became a grail. In 2017 Newman's own Daytona sold at auction for 17.8 million dollars. None of which has anything to do with Pascalou, who is just a man on holiday wearing a very good watch, probably his own.
