A married couple takes a yacht into the Pacific to grieve. In Phillip Noyce's Dead Calm, John and Rae Ingram are sailing out their mourning after the death of their young son when they come upon a man rowing away from a sinking schooner. He is Hughie Warriner, played by Billy Zane, and he tells them the rest of his crew died of food poisoning. John goes to inspect the schooner. Hughie strands him aboard it and makes off with Rae on the Ingrams' own boat. Nicole Kidman, in one of her first leading roles, spends most of the film alone with him, working out how to stay alive.
On Rae's wrist through these scenes is a round dive watch with a knurled rotating bezel. The black-and-white production stills show the case and the bezel clearly enough, but not a maker's mark, and no reliable source has ever pinned down who made it. The watch has been called both a Seiko and a Citizen over the years, with nothing authoritative to settle the question, and the one specific claim in circulation, a Citizen ana-digi diver, does not match the plain analog watch on screen. What can be said for certain is only what the frame shows: a no-nonsense diver of the kind sold by the thousands in the 1980s, its brand never established.
