Gore Verbinski made The Weather Man (2005) between the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films, and the tonal whiplash is extreme. This is a small, bitter comedy about a man who hates his life. Nicolas Cage plays David Spritz, a Chicago TV weatherman who earns a good salary, is in contention for a national broadcast job, and is completely miserable. His marriage has collapsed. His father, played by Michael Caine, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose quiet disappointment is worse than anger. Strangers throw fast food at him on the street because they recognize him from TV and think it is funny. Steve Conrad wrote the script, and the film is honest about something most movies will not touch: that success and unhappiness can coexist perfectly well.
Spritz's watch is visible in a scene where he wears a name tag reading "Dave." It appears to be a steel watch with a light dial, but it cannot be identified. For a character defined by the gap between his professional image and his personal disaster, a watch is just one more prop in the performance of being a functional adult.
