At 8:08 in the morning Cris Johnson sits at a diner with a martini, checking his watch; a minute later he checks it again and looks at the door. He can see two minutes into his own future, the premise of Lee Tamahori's Next (2007), loosely adapted from Philip K. Dick's "The Golden Man." Nicolas Cage plays him as a small-time Las Vegas magician working under the stage name Frank Cadillac, hunted by a terrorist cell while FBI agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) tries to use his precognition to find a stolen nuclear weapon.

On Cris's wrist is a TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16. The Carrera has been TAG Heuer's racing chronograph since 1963, when Jack Heuer named it after the Carrera Panamericana road race; the Calibre 16 is TAG Heuer's branded version of the Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement, with a 42-hour power reserve and 100 meters of water resistance. Later, in a motel room, Cris uses the watch as a timing tool, asking Liz Cooper (Jessica Biel) to set hers to 9:17 and handing her a note to follow once he leaves.
