Nicolas Cage wears a Simon Chang

Brian De Palma's Snake Eyes (1998) opens with a bravura unbroken Steadicam take that follows Nicolas Cage's corrupt Atlantic City detective Rick Santoro through a casino boxing arena in the minutes before the on-air assassination of the Secretary of Defense, the killing that sets the whole plot spinning. Santoro is dressed to be noticed: a golden-yellow aloha shirt under a rust-brown suit, snakeskin loafers, a gold necklace, a gold ID bracelet engraved "Ricky," and a gold watch riding on his wrist as he works the room. The wardrobe is one long brag in metal, and the watch is meant to read as part of it.

That watch is a Simon Chang, the brand of the Canadian fashion designer who licensed his name onto a line of watches built by outside makers. We know it not from squinting at a frame but from the object itself: Santoro's screen-worn jewelry later sold as an authenticated set, catalogued down to the Simon Chang gold watch with its beveled band, alongside the gold wedding band and the square-link chain with its raised "R," all worn by Cage throughout the movie, and the same lot carried two separate prop-house pedigrees. This is the strongest class of watch evidence there is, the physical watch off the production with the brand read straight from the case.

On screen the watch flashes as a yellow-gold dive-style piece, link bracelet and champagne dial, and it looks expensive enough that the educated visual guess ran to a luxury Swiss sport watch, a TAG Heuer, before the prop's real branding settled it. There is a small joke in that gap. The credible guess was a step up from the licensed-fashion reality, which is exactly the trick Santoro runs on everyone around him. The costume sells more status than the watch actually carries, and that gap is the character.
