Mike Figgis shot Leaving Las Vegas (1995) on 16mm in 28 days for $3.5 million, and Nicolas Cage won the Best Actor Oscar for playing Ben Sanderson, a Hollywood screenwriter who has lost his career, his family, and his will to live to alcoholism. He moves to Las Vegas to drink himself to death.
The Rolex Daytona is the last artifact of the life Ben destroyed, and the film names it out loud. In the pawnshop scene he looks at the broker's offer and says, "Five hundred dollars for a 1993 Rolex Daytona?" before taking it anyway. The line has become famous among watch collectors, because a steel Daytona of that era was worth many times what Ben accepts. He takes the lowball without hesitation, because all he wants is enough money to keep drinking.
