Nicolas Cage wears an Armitron Pro 49 Black

Somewhere inside the condemned shell of Willy's Wonderland, a man in a grey tee presses his open palm flat against a dark wall and listens. The light is low and bruised, blue going to red, and the only thing on him that catches it is a black watch on his left wrist. This is Nicolas Cage, and the strange thing about the performance is that he never says a word. Cage plays a drifter, billed only as The Janitor, coerced into scrubbing a shuttered family entertainment center overnight while its animatronic mascots come alive to kill. The 2021 film, produced by Cage's own Saturn Films, hands one of the loudest actors alive a wordless lead, and the watch becomes part of how we read a man who tells us nothing about himself.

What rides on that wrist is a large, chunky black resin sports watch, big and rounded across the case. The frame is shadowed and the arm is moving, so the dial cannot be read off the screen, but the size and material and color point to an Armitron Pro 49 Black, a roughly 49mm ana-digi packed with functions: day and date, chronograph, alarm, countdown, dual time, backlight, water resistance to 330 feet. Armitron is a budget American brand, and this is a genuinely cheap watch, well under twenty dollars. A near-silent Cage doing battle with killer animatronics in a sub-twenty-dollar plastic Armitron is exactly the unglamorous, true-to-character prop a drifter with nothing would actually own.
