Nicaragua, 1979, the last days of the Somoza regime. Roger Spottiswoode's Under Fire (1983) puts Nick Nolte in the field as Russell Price, a conflict photographer who crosses a line when he fakes a photograph to help the Sandinista rebels. Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy are the other two corners of a love triangle that runs alongside the politics.
Price wears a busy multi-register chronograph, the kind of mechanical tool watch a working photographer in a war zone would carry. Exactly which one is disputed: a French watch column calls it a Breitling Navitimer, while vintage-Heuer collectors who have studied the film identify it as a Heuer Autavia GMT and say it is plainly visible on screen. The surviving stills are not sharp enough to settle it.
