Nicholas Hoult wears an Omega Seamaster

Steven Stelfox works in A&R, which in the London record industry of 1997 meant he was paid to find the next big band and, mostly, to go to parties. In Kill Your Friends, Owen Harris's 2015 film of John Niven's novel, Nicholas Hoult plays Stelfox as a man who decides the fastest route to a promotion runs through a rival's skull, then narrates his own climb in a flat, amused voice that owes an open debt to American Psycho. The poster sums it up: Stelfox at a table with a kitchen knife in front of him, the Union Jack behind him scrawled with the bands of the moment, several of their names already crossed out.

On his wrist in that same poster is a large steel dive watch. The bezel is black with a knurled edge, the dial black with bright applied markers, the hour hand broad, the bracelet steel with polished center links. A watch-trade write-up identified it as an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, the 600-meter professional diving line Omega launched in 2005. The film is set in 1997, eight years before that watch reached shops.
