Ali (2001) is Michael Mann's portrait of Muhammad Ali at his peak, and Mykelti Williamson plays the promoter Don King, the man who turned the Rumble in the Jungle into theater. King is all spectacle, the vertical hair and the bigger-than-the-fighters presence, so his watch is part of the act.
Propstore sold King's screen-worn accessories together: a faux Amstar wristwatch with a silver woven band and a black face with gold numbers, a non-functional gold Zippo, and two production Polaroids the wardrobe team shot to track continuity. The watch is a costume piece dressed to read as gold and flash from across a ring, which is the only distance from which Don King ever wanted to be seen.
