In Paul W.S. Anderson's In the Lost Lands, the witch Gray Alys recruits the hunter Boyce to guide her into the wasteland, and she tries to buy him with a watch. Milla Jovovich offers a bare gold watch head with no strap. Dave Bautista's Boyce looks at it and says, "I've heard of these, but I've never seen one." In the film's ruined future it is the oldest and most precious relic left from the past.
The relic is a Blancpain Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback, reference 2358-3631-55B, and the production filmed the real one. It is 45 mm of 18K red gold, 17.8 mm thick, with a white grand feu enamel dial opened at the center to show the works. A single automatic movement carries a one-minute flying carrousel, a minute repeater and a flyback chronograph with a central 30-minute counter. Blancpain introduced it at Baselworld in 2013 and prices it at $503,800.
In George R.R. Martin's 1982 short story the object was a gem. Anderson wanted a watch because it suited a story about time, and a watch enthusiast on his crew chose this one. On set it traveled on a velvet tray with a Blancpain security representative, and Jovovich said the watch was treated better than the actors. For the climax, when it slides off a pile of skulls during an earth tremor, the representative agreed to let the real watch take the fall onto a velvet cushion.
It is one of the most complicated watches Blancpain makes, and this was the brand's first film role, 290 years after Jehan-Jacques Blancpain opened his workshop in the Jura village the Villeret line is named for.
