By 1994, Michael Madsen had parlayed Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs into a career playing dangerous men. The Getaway is a remake of the 1972 Sam Peckinpah film — Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger replacing Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, Roger Donaldson directing. Madsen plays Rudy Travis, a criminal who chases Baldwin's Doc McCoy across the Southwest after a botched heist. He's good at this kind of role: physically imposing, unpredictable, the guy you know is going to cause problems before he opens his mouth.
In this promotional still, Madsen stands with a revolver, wearing a dark shirt open at the collar and a cross necklace — the costume department's shorthand for a bad guy with style. A watch is visible on his left wrist but the black-and-white image doesn't reveal enough detail to identify it. It looks like a chunky piece, possibly on a metal bracelet, which suits a character who treats jewelry the way he treats everything else: aggressively.
