David Fincher gave Nicholas Van Orton an old Patek Philippe because Van Orton is the kind of man who was born owning one. Michael Douglas plays a San Francisco investment banker so wealthy and so controlled that his brother buys him an elaborate psychological game just to make him feel something. The watch is his late father's, a rectangular Patek Philippe from the late 1930s, sold through Tiffany & Co. and engraved on the back, "On your 18th birthday, your father's watch, love Mother." It is the watch equivalent of inherited money. It does not announce itself. It assumes you already know what it is.

The piece comes from a period before Patek assigned reference numbers, when the company made only a few thousand watches a year, so the exact model carries no catalog name. What matters is its restraint: a plain rectangular dress watch with a Tiffany-stamped dial and nothing to distract from its proportions. On Van Orton, it reads as taste so old it has calcified into rigidity, which is precisely what the film sets out to dismantle. He receives the watch after his father's suicide and later pawns it for cash when the game leaves him drugged and broke in Mexico.
