Mindhunter opens its second season by handing the Behavioral Science Unit a new boss. Assistant Director Ted Gunn, played by Michael Cerveris, is the Bureau man who decides the agents' serial-killer interviews are worth funding and defending. He is shot buttoned and composed, and in one early frame he stands with his hands folded, an FBI Academy staff badge clipped to his lapel and a large steel Rolex on his left wrist.
The watch is a Rolex Explorer II with a black dial. The orange 24-hour hand and the solid-link steel Oyster bracelet mark it as the modern 42mm generation, reference 216570, which Rolex made from 2011 to 2021 with the caliber 3187 inside. Rolex built the first Explorer II in 1971 for cavers and polar researchers who could lose the difference between morning and night, giving it a fixed 24-hour bezel and an extra hand to read against it. That orange hand is the line's signature. On the original reference, the 1655, Italian collectors called it the Freccione, the big arrow.
The trouble is the calendar. Season 2 runs through 1980 and 1981, the years of the Atlanta child murders the episodes dramatize. A period-correct Explorer II would be that 1655, a 40mm watch Rolex discontinued in 1985. The 216570 is a larger, later watch that Rolex did not introduce until 2011. Watch spotters on the Rolex forums flagged it the week the show aired, naming the modern bracelet's solid end links and the case's size on the wrist as the tells.
Of the show's regulars, Gunn is the one whose rank and salary would put a Rolex on his wrist without comment, so the brand is plausible even when the era is not. What dates the watch is the reference. Rolex did not introduce the 42mm 216570 until 2011, thirty-one years after the events of the premiere.
