Michael Caine wears a Rolex Day-Date

Joseph Losey's The Romantic Englishwoman (1975) is a study of a marriage coming apart. Michael Caine plays Lewis Fielding, a successful novelist; his wife Elizabeth, played by Glenda Jackson, leaves him and their child and goes to Baden-Baden, where she meets Thomas (Helmut Berger), a charming drifter who is really a small-time crook and gigolo. Back in England, Lewis half-invites Thomas into the house, partly out of suspicion and partly to mine the situation for his writing, and the arrangement curdles. Tom Stoppard wrote the screenplay with Thomas Wiseman, from Wiseman's novel.

On Caine's wrist is a watch on a dark leather strap, very likely his Rolex Day-Date. Watchonista traces the gold Day-Date he bought for himself after he became a star and wore on screen and off for more than a decade, on just such a strap, and the watch here fits that pattern. Rolex had introduced the Day-Date in 1956 as the first wristwatch to print the day of the week in full on the dial, and made it only in gold or platinum. The brand is not legible in the still, so the identification leans on Caine's long habit rather than a clear read of the dial.
