Michael Caine wears a Rolex Day-Date

In Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980), a slick Hitchcock homage, Michael Caine plays Dr. Robert Elliott, a Manhattan psychiatrist with a dangerous secret. The film keeps its camera on his face. In one office scene, as Elliott takes a phone call, his raised wrist brings a flash of gold into the corner of the frame, a gold watch on a gold bracelet.

The dial never resolves. It stays tucked under the shirt cuff, so no day, no date, no lettering ever shows. What does show is the bracelet, a rounded three-piece-link President pattern with polished centers between satin flanks. That is a Rolex bracelet, and on a gold case it points to the Day-Date. There is good reason to think it is Caine's own. He was a lifelong Rolex wearer who owned a yellow-gold Day-Date, reference 1803, on the President bracelet with a linen-textured gold dial, and he was known to wear his personal watch to set rather than a wardrobe piece, on screen and off, for well over a decade.

Caine also owned a later champagne Oysterquartz Day-Date, reference 19018, but that one rides on a flat, angular integrated bracelet, and the rounded President links on Elliott's wrist are not it. So the watch in Dressed to Kill is most likely the older 1803. Either way it is a Day-Date, the model Rolex introduced in 1956 as its only watch to spell out the day in full at twelve, made exclusively in gold or platinum.
