The still on this record catches Charles Monroe King out of uniform, at a red-leather restaurant booth, a steel watch with a pale dial on brown leather on his left wrist. Michael B. Jordan plays King in Denzel Washington's A Journal for Jordan (2021), the First Sergeant who filled a journal with advice for the son he met once before dying in Iraq, and the watch is the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Roberto Clemente Limited Edition: 40 millimeters of steel, the dial trimmed in black and gold after Clemente's Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, the date read by a central pointer hand against an outer scale where the 21, Clemente's jersey number, is printed in gold.
Oris built the edition around a number that is itself a record: 3,000 pieces, the number of hits Clemente had in his career. The caseback carries an engraving of Clemente at bat, the brown leather strap is stitched like a baseball glove, a second NATO strap patterned on his jersey comes in the box, and the watch listed at 1,950 dollars. Clemente, the Hall of Fame Pirates outfielder, died at 38 in a 1972 plane crash while delivering earthquake relief to Nicaragua. It is one of two Oris tribute editions the film put on Jordan's wrist; Wrist Enthusiast also spotted the bronze Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition, honoring the Navy diver who made master diver after losing his left leg.
